Yes. Moisture vapor transmitting upward through a concrete slab is one of the most common causes of LVP seam failure over time. The planks themselves won't absorb the moisture, but the locking joints at the seams are not hermetically sealed. Sustained moisture pressure at the slab surface works its way into the joint interface, compromising the locking connection and eventually causing seam separation, edge lifting, and surface peaking. A proper moisture barrier between the concrete and the LVP is the correct solution, and on the products carried at WarehouseDirect.US skipping that barrier voids the warranty entirely.
Concrete slabs transmit moisture vapor continuously regardless of how dry they appear on the surface. The process is driven by the difference in vapor pressure between the moist ground below the slab and the drier air above it. Moisture moves toward the lower pressure environment, which means it moves upward through the slab and accumulates at the surface. In a finished space with flooring installed, that moisture has nowhere to go and builds up at the interface between the slab and the flooring assembly above it. Over time that accumulated moisture works into any gap it can find, including the locking joints between LVP planks.
The locking joint system in LVP click-lock flooring is designed to hold planks together mechanically under normal conditions. It is not designed to resist sustained hydrostatic pressure from moisture accumulating beneath it. When moisture works into a seam it does two things over time. First it introduces a lubricating layer between the locking surfaces that reduces the mechanical grip of the joint. Second if the moisture carries mineral deposits from the concrete, efflorescence, it can deposit those minerals in the joint and physically force the connection apart as the deposits build up. Both processes happen slowly and invisibly beneath the surface until the damage is significant enough to show as visible seam separation or edge lifting.
The severity of moisture damage to LVP seams correlates directly with the volume of moisture the slab is transmitting. A slab with low moisture vapor emission in a well-conditioned space may transmit moisture for years without causing visible seam damage. A slab with high moisture vapor emission, common in below-grade installations, new construction where the slab hasn't fully cured, or slabs without adequate ground vapor barriers beneath them, can cause seam damage relatively quickly after installation. Testing the slab for moisture vapor emission before installation is the only reliable way to know which situation you're dealing with. Visual inspection alone is not sufficient because significant moisture transmission can occur through a slab that looks and feels completely dry.
The most persistent misconception is that a waterproof LVP plank is immune to moisture damage from below. Waterproof means the plank body won't absorb water. It does not mean the locking joints are sealed against moisture vapor pressure from a concrete substrate. Those are two completely different properties. A floor can be 100% waterproof in the plank and still develop seam failure from moisture pressure beneath it if the vapor barrier step was skipped. The waterproof rating describes the plank. The vapor barrier protects the installation.Β
