Yes, underlayment reduces noise in an LVP installation, but most quality LVP sold today already has a pre-attached pad on the bottom of the plank that handles sound absorption and cushioning. If your product has pre-attached padding, that's your underlayment and no separate layer goes beneath it. Adding one voids most warranties and actually makes noise worse by introducing too much movement into the locking joint system. If your product has no pre-attached pad, a separate underlayment is needed and the type you choose affects how well the floor handles both footstep noise traveling to rooms below and the ambient hollow sound that floating floors can produce.Β
Impact sound reduction is the noise category that matters most in multi-story homes and any installation above a finished living space. Every footstep on a hard surface floor generates impact energy that travels through the floor assembly into the structure below. Underlayment absorbs some of that impact energy before it reaches the subfloor, reducing the amount that transmits as sound to the ceiling of the room below. Cork underlayment outperforms standard foam on impact sound reduction because cork is denser and more effective at absorbing impact energy across a wider frequency range. Most quality products ship with a pre-attached foam or cork pad bonded to the bottom of the plank. That pad is matched to the product's performance specifications and is all the underlayment the installation requires. The only separate underlayment component that gets added in most concrete installations is a vapor barrier, which goes down on the slab first and handles moisture management rather than sound. The LVP with its pre-attached pad then goes on top of the vapor barrier. Those are two separate functions handled by two separate components, and understanding that distinction prevents the common mistake of adding unnecessary underlayment beneath a product that already has it.Β
The most common noise-related mistake is adding a separate underlayment beneath LVP that already has pre-attached padding in the belief that more underlayment means less noise. It doesn't work that way. Doubling underlayment introduces too much give into the locking joint system, which actually increases the hollow and clicking sounds the extra layer was supposed to eliminate.
