On raw scratch resistance, high-end laminate has a harder wear surface than most LVP products. But scratch resistance is only one part of the equation when you have large dogs. LVP wins on moisture resistance, dent resistance, and overall resilience under the specific conditions large dogs create. A floor that scratches slightly less but gets permanently damaged by water bowl spills, muddy paw moisture, and pet accidents is not a better floor for a home with large dogs. The full picture favors LVP for most dog owners.
Laminate's wear surface is made with aluminum oxide, an extremely hard compound that resists surface scratching effectively. Quality laminate rated at AC3 or AC4 abrasion class holds up well against dog nails under normal conditions. On a pure scratch resistance test, that hard surface outperforms mid-range LVP wear layers. What LVP adds on top of adequate scratch resistance is full waterproofing, dent resilience, and surface recovery from the kind of concentrated point loads that large dog nails create when a dog plants and pushes off a hard surface. That combination of properties is better suited to the real conditions large dogs create than laminate's superior scratch hardness alone.
