Q: What Types of Cores Are Used in LVP Flooring?Β
Luxury vinyl plank is built around one of three core types: SPC (stone plastic composite), WPC (wood plastic composite), or standard flexible vinyl. SPC is the most common in today's market and the one most installers and retailers mean when they talk about rigid core LVP. Each core type performs differently under foot traffic, temperature changes, and moisture, so the core is one of the first things worth understanding before you buy.
SPC core is made from limestone powder, PVC, and stabilizers pressed into a dense, rigid plank. The high stone content makes it extremely stable, meaning it resists expansion and contraction when temperatures swing. It's also thinner and harder than WPC, which makes it a better choice over existing tile or uneven subfloors. Most of the LVP sold in the market today is SPC, and for good reason. It handles real-world conditions in homes and commercial spaces without the dimensional instability that plagued older vinyl products.
WPC core replaces some of the stone content with a foamed wood-plastic composite material. The result is a plank that's slightly softer and warmer underfoot than SPC, with a bit more cushion. WPC tends to be thicker overall, which can help it feel more substantial when you're walking on it. The tradeoff is that WPC is less dimensionally stable than SPC in extreme temperature conditions and is generally not recommended for spaces with wide temperature swings, like sunrooms or spaces over unconditioned crawl spaces.
Standard flexible vinyl, sometimes called LVT (luxury vinyl tile) or simply vinyl plank without a rigid core, is the older generation of the product. It's thinner, softer, and less stable than either SPC or WPC. It can still work fine in low-traffic, temperature-controlled spaces, but it's largely been replaced by rigid core products in most retail and contractor applications. If you're comparing quotes and one product is significantly cheaper than the others, check whether it has a rigid core or not.
Most people shopping for LVP focus on the wear layer thickness and the visual design, and skip right past the core. The core is actually what determines how the floor performs over time. Two planks that look identical on the surface can behave very differently five years in if one has a dense SPC core and the other has a thin flexible vinyl base. Ask about the core before you buy, not after.Β

The consistent field observation from that experience is that subfloor condition determines which core you need more than anything else. Customers sometimes come in with a specific product picked out from an online retailer, and when we ask about their subfloor situation, it's clear the product they chose isn't right for it. A WPC product going into a space with significant temperature variation, or a flexible vinyl plank going over a subfloor with minor height variation, are both setups for problems down the road.
What we tell most customers is this: if you're not sure, go SPC. It's the most forgiving core for the widest range of subfloor conditions, it handles Kentucky's humidity and temperature swings well, and it's what the majority of our stock is built around.
