Opening seams in LVP almost always trace back to one of four causes: thermal expansion without adequate expansion gaps, a run length that exceeded manufacturer limits without a transition break, subfloor variation that's stressing the locking joints, or an underlayment that's too thick and soft introducing excess movement into the locking system. In rare cases a manufacturing defect in the locking profile is responsible, but that's the least common explanation by a significant margin. Before assuming the product failed, work through the installation conditions because that's where the answer almost always lives.Β
Thermal expansion is the most common cause of opening seams in LVP. Every floating floor expands and contracts with temperature changes, and that movement needs somewhere to go. Expansion gaps at the perimeter walls and at every fixed vertical surface provide that relief. When expansion gaps are too tight, installed against the wall without adequate clearance, or when heavy furniture or cabinet bases are pinning sections of the floor down, the expanding floor has no room to move and the pressure distributes into the locking joints instead. Seams open at the weakest points in the run as the floor pushes outward with nowhere to go. This pattern is most visible in summer when interior temperatures peak and the floor is at maximum expansion.
Run length is the second common cause. Most LVP manufacturers specify a maximum continuous run length, typically 30 to 50 feet in any direction, before a transition break is required. A floor installed across a large open plan space without transition breaks accumulates thermal movement across the entire run length. Even small expansion per linear foot adds up to significant total movement across a 60-foot run. That accumulated movement concentrates at the joints farthest from the perimeter expansion gaps, which is why seams in the middle of a large open floor plan tend to open before seams near the walls do.
Subfloor variation causes seam opening through a different mechanism. A low spot in the subfloor allows planks to flex downward under foot traffic, putting bending stress on the locking joint at each end of the unsupported span. A high spot creates a fulcrum that levers adjacent planks apart under load. Both conditions fatigue the locking connection over time in ways that show up as gradual seam opening rather than sudden joint failure. This pattern often develops slowly over the first year of a floor's life as traffic accumulates and the locking joints absorb repeated stress cycles they weren't designed to handle.
The most common mistake when seams start opening is to push them back together and assume the problem is solved. Closing a seam that opened from thermal expansion or subfloor stress doesn't address the condition causing the movement. The seam will open again, usually faster the second time because the locking profile has already been stressed once. The correct response is to identify the cause first, whether that's inadequate expansion gaps, a run length issue, or a subfloor condition, and address the root cause before attempting any repair. A seam that keeps reopening after being closed is telling you something about the installation conditions that needs to be fixed, not just managed.Β
