Yes, humps and dips in a subfloor that exceed manufacturer tolerances will cause LVP to fail over time. The failure isn't always immediate, which is part of what makes subfloor variation so problematic. A floor installed over an out-of-spec subfloor often looks and feels fine for the first few months. The problems develop gradually as the locking joints absorb stress they weren't designed to handle, eventually showing up as joint separation, edge lifting, clicking sounds underfoot, and visible surface waves. By the time those symptoms are obvious the damage to the locking system is usually already done.Β
Humps are the more immediately damaging of the two subfloor problems. A high spot under a floating LVP floor creates a fulcrum effect where the planks on either side of the hump flex downward under foot traffic. Every step concentrates stress at the locking joints adjacent to the high spot. Over time that repeated flexing fatigues the click-lock connection and the joint begins to separate. Once a locking joint fails in a floating floor the gap is visible, the edge of the plank can lift, and moisture can get into the joint in ways it wasn't designed to handle. The hump that caused the problem may be less than a quarter inch high, small enough to feel minor during installation but large enough to destroy the joint integrity above it over months of traffic.
Dips create a different but equally damaging failure pattern. A low spot means the plank spanning it has no subfloor support in that area. The plank bridges the dip and flexes slightly with every footstep, like a board over a gap. That flex puts repeated bending stress on the plank itself and on the locking connections at both ends. Hollow spots underfoot are the first sign of this problem, that slightly soft, drum-like feel when you walk over a section of floor. Left unaddressed the repeated flexing eventually cracks the core or fails the locking joint, neither of which is repairable without replacing the affected planks.
The important distinction is between subfloor variation that falls within manufacturer tolerance and variation that exceeds it. Minor imperfections within the 3/16 inch over 10 feet standard are what LVP is engineered to accommodate. The floating floor system and the core material are designed with that amount of variation in mind. It's the variation beyond that threshold that creates problems, and the severity of the eventual failure is roughly proportional to how far outside the tolerance the subfloor was when the floor went in. A subfloor that was slightly out of spec will cause problems eventually. A subfloor that was significantly out of spec will cause them sooner and more severely.
The most damaging misconception about subfloor humps and dips is that LVP's reputation for forgiving installation means subfloor prep can be skipped or minimized. LVP is more forgiving than tile or hardwood on minor variation, but more forgiving has a specific technical meaning defined by the manufacturer tolerance. It does not mean any subfloor condition is acceptable. The homeowners and contractors who interpret forgiving as meaning no prep required are the ones generating the callbacks and warranty disputes when the floor starts showing problems six to eighteen months after installation.Β
