Beyond that threshold a transition strip or expansion break is required to give the floor room to move with temperature and humidity changes. In a large open floor plan that exceeds those dimensions in either direction, a transition isn't just a design choice. It's a structural requirement that prevents buckling, joint stress, and edge lifting as the floor expands and contracts over time.Β
The continuous run limit exists because even dimensionally stable SPC flooring expands and contracts a small amount with temperature changes. That movement is minimal per linear foot but accumulates across the total length of an uninterrupted run. A floor running 40 feet wall to wall with no transition break has nowhere to go when it expands. If the expansion gaps at the perimeter walls are adequate the floor may manage within spec. If they're tight, or if the run length significantly exceeds the manufacturer limit, the accumulated expansion pressure has to go somewhere and it goes into the joints and the surface, showing up as buckling, peaking at the seams, or edge lifting along the walls.
Doorways are the most natural and practical location for transition strips in a continuous run installation. A transition at every doorway between rooms keeps each room's run length within spec in most standard residential floor plans.
