A vapor barrier is a physical membrane installed between the concrete slab and the LVP that blocks moisture transmission from the slab to the flooring above it. A concrete sealer treats the surface of the slab itself but does not provide the same level of moisture protection that a dedicated vapor barrier delivers. A vapor barrier addresses moisture transmission at the right point in the assembly. A polyethylene sheet barrier, typically 6 mil or heavier, laid over the concrete before the LVP goes down creates a physical separation between the moisture source and the flooring. Some LVP products come with a pre-attached underlayment that includes a vapor barrier layer built in, which simplifies the installation. Products without an integrated vapor barrier require a separate sheet barrier to be installed before the planks go down. Concrete sealers work differently and serve a different purpose.
