Luxury vinyl plank can handle moderate sunlight but prolonged direct UV exposure is one of its genuine weaknesses. Extended direct sunlight can cause LVP to fade, discolor, and in poorly climate-controlled spaces, contribute to thermal expansion that stresses the floor. Most manufacturers include UV exposure limitations in their warranty language. If you have a room with large south or west-facing windows that flood the floor with direct sun for hours each day, that's a conversation worth having before you choose your product.Β
The printed design layer in LVP is protected by the wear layer above it, but the wear layer is not a UV filter. Over time, direct sunlight breaks down the color and pattern in the design layer, causing fading that starts subtly and becomes more pronounced over years of exposure. The fading tends to be uneven, showing most clearly in the areas of the floor that receive the most direct sun while the areas under furniture or rugs stay closer to the original color. That contrast is what makes UV fading so visually obvious once it develops.
Some LVP products include UV inhibitors in the wear layer that slow the fading process, and this is worth asking about specifically if you're buying for a sun-heavy room. Not all products offer this, and it's rarely called out prominently on the packaging. The presence of UV inhibitors doesn't make the floor immune to fading, it extends the timeline before fading becomes noticeable. For rooms with intense direct sun exposure, UV-filtering window film or window treatments that block direct light during peak hours are the most effective way to protect any flooring, not just LVP.
Heat from direct sunlight compounds the UV issue in spaces that aren't well climate controlled. A sunroom or a room with large unshaded windows can see floor-level temperatures significantly higher than the thermostat reading, especially in Kentucky summers. That heat contributes to thermal expansion on top of the UV exposure, putting stress on the floor from two directions at once. SPC handles the thermal component better than WPC in those conditions, but neither core type solves the UV fading issue on its own.
A lot of homeowners assume that because LVP is durable and waterproof it's also immune to sun damage. Waterproofing and UV resistance are completely separate properties. A floor can be 100% waterproof and still fade significantly under prolonged direct sunlight. This misunderstanding leads people to install LVP in sun-drenched spaces without any window treatment or UV protection strategy, then wonder why the floor looks noticeably different under the couch than in the open areas after a few years.
One of our owners fielded more than a few callbacks during his installation years from customers unhappy about uneven fading in their floors. In almost every case the room had significant direct sun exposure and no window treatments to speak of. The floor itself had performed exactly as rated. The UV exposure had simply exceeded what any LVP product is designed to handle indefinitely without some form of protection.
