It's measured in mils, where one mil equals one thousandth of an inch. The thicker the wear layer the longer the surface resists scratching, scuffing, and surface degradation before the floor starts to show wear. Entry-level residential products typically start at 7 mil. For most residential situations, a 20 mil wear layer is the baseline we'd recommend. It handles typical family living, pets, and high-traffic areas without question. For customers who want to buy once and never think about it again, our 28 and 30 mil products are where that conversation ends.Β

Core quality is the second thing to evaluate. A dense SPC core made from limestone powder and PVC is the gold standard for residential LVP. You can do a simple physical check: pick up a plank and flex it. A quality SPC core will have almost no flex. It should feel rigid and solid, closer to tile than to flexible vinyl. Knock on it. A quality SPC plank produces a solid, dense sound rather than a hollow one. These aren't scientific tests but they give you a reliable read on core density before you commit to a purchase.
Certifications and testing standards are worth looking at on the spec sheet. FloorScore certification indicates the product has been tested for indoor air quality and VOC emissions. ASTM testing references on the spec sheet indicate the wear layer and core have been tested against recognized industry standards rather than just manufacturer claims. Warranty terms are another signal: a manufacturer confident enough in their product to offer a lifetime residential warranty is making a different statement about quality than one offering a 10-year limited warranty with significant exclusions.
The single most common mistake is using visual realism as a quality proxy. A floor can have a stunning, highly realistic wood-look print layer sitting on top of a thin, low-grade wear layer and a mediocre core. The print layer has nothing to do with how long the floor lasts. Two floors that look identical in a showroom can have completely different lifespans based entirely on what's underneath the design layer. If a salesperson spends most of the conversation talking about how realistic the floor looks and very little time on the wear layer mil rating and core specs, ask the spec questions yourself before you buy.Β
One of our owners spent ten years on the installation side and his consistent observation was that the customers who came back unhappy almost never had a product that failed visually in the first year or two. The floors looked fine. The issues showed up in wear layer degradation, surface scratching that went through to the print layer, and joint stress in thinner core products under real traffic conditions.
