The core determines how the floor handles subfloor conditions, temperature changes, and the structural stress of foot traffic over time. A thick wear layer on a weak core is like a tough finish on a soft substrate. A dense core with a thin wear layer will feel solid underfoot but scratch and degrade at the surface faster than it should. The combination of both is what separates a floor that lasts 25 years from one that needs replacing in ten.Β
The wear layer is the part of the floor that ages visibly. Every scratch, scuff, and surface mark is an event in the wear layer. When the wear layer degrades enough that scratches reach the print layer underneath, the floor starts looking worn and there's no fixing it short of replacement. Wear layer thickness in mils is the direct indicator of how long that visible surface holds up. A 20 mil wear layer handles residential traffic significantly longer than a 7 mil product under the same conditions. At 28 and 30 mil you're in commercial-grade territory where surface wear becomes a non-issue for most residential timelines.
The core does a different job. It provides the structural foundation that keeps the floor flat, stable, and locked together under the mechanical stress of daily use. A dense SPC core resists the flex and movement that fatigues locking joints over time. It bridges minor subfloor imperfections without transferring them to the surface. It handles temperature-driven expansion and contraction better than a foamed or flexible core. The way to think about it is this: the wear layer determines the surface lifespan and the core determines the structural lifespan. In a well-built product those two lifespans should be roughly matched. A floor engineered with a 30 mil wear layer on a dense SPC core is built for the same long timeline in both dimensions. A floor with a thick wear layer on a thin or low-density core, or a great core under a thin wear layer, has a mismatch that will show up eventually. When you're evaluating products, check both specs together rather than optimizing for one at the expense of the other.
