Peaking and buckling in LVP almost always mean the floor has nowhere to expand. The planks are pushing against a fixed surface, a wall, a cabinet base, a door jamb, or a transition strip that's been fastened too tightly, and the thermal expansion that happens naturally with temperature changes has no relief. The pressure builds in the locking joints until the floor lifts at its weakest point. That lifting is the buckle. It's not a product failure. It's a physics problem created by inadequate expansion gaps, excessive run length, or something pinning the floor down that shouldn't be.
LVP expands and contracts with temperature changes even with a dense SPC core. The expansion per linear foot is small but cumulative across the full run length of the floor. A properly installed floor with adequate expansion gaps at every fixed vertical surface absorbs that movement without visible effect. A floor installed tight to the walls, or with furniture, cabinet bases, or transition strips restricting movement at any point in the run, has nowhere to go when it expands. The pressure that builds in the locking joint system eventually exceeds what the joints can absorb and the floor lifts, peaks, or buckles at the point of maximum stress.
The timing of buckling is usually a reliable indicator of the cause. Buckling that develops in summer, when interior temperatures are at their highest and the floor is at maximum expansion, almost always indicates inadequate expansion gaps or excessive run length. The floor managed the winter contraction without visible problems because contraction pulls the joints together rather than pushing them apart. The summer expansion revealed the gap deficiency that was present since installation but hadn't been challenged yet. Buckling that develops in winter points toward a different problem, usually moisture from below pushing up on the floor assembly rather than thermal expansion.
The location of the buckle within the room also provides diagnostic information. Buckling near a wall or fixed vertical surface indicates the expansion gap at that surface is too tight and the floor is pushing against it. Buckling in the middle of a large open floor plan, away from the walls, indicates a run length issue where the accumulated expansion across a long uninterrupted run has no adequate relief at the perimeter. Buckling in a specific localized area that doesn't follow the thermal expansion pattern, particularly in a basement or slab-on-grade installation, points toward moisture pressure from below rather than thermal expansion from above.
The most common mistake when LVP buckles is assuming the product warped or the core failed and filing a warranty claim without evaluating the installation conditions first. Manufacturers investigate warranty claims and the first thing they look at is whether the expansion gaps were adequate and whether the installation followed the specified guidelines. A buckled floor with tight expansion gaps or a run length that exceeded the manufacturer specification is an installation failure, not a product failure, and warranty claims based on installation failures are routinely denied. Identifying the actual cause before pursuing a warranty claim saves time and produces a faster resolution.

The fix for thermal buckling caught early is usually manageable. Pull the baseboard and quarter round, re-establish the correct expansion gap by trimming the planks back from the wall if necessary, and reinstall the trim with the correct clearance. If the buckle has been severe enough to damage the locking joints in the affected area those planks may need to be replaced, which is why having that extra box of matching flooring stored away matters. A buckle addressed in its first summer is a repair. A buckle ignored through multiple seasonal cycles is a replacement.
