Standing water on the surface of LVP won't damage the planks themselves because SPC core LVP is 100% waterproof. The risk isn't to the plank, it's to what's beneath it. Water that sits long enough on the surface will eventually find its way into the seams between planks and reach the subfloor below. How quickly that happens depends on the volume of water, how tight the joint fit is, and how long the water sits before it's removed. A small amount of standing water cleaned up within a reasonable timeframe is unlikely to cause lasting damage. A significant water event, a burst pipe, a flooding basement, an overflowing appliance, that sits for hours or days is a different situation entirely.Β
The waterproof designation on SPC LVP means the plank body won't absorb water and the core won't swell, buckle, or delaminate from moisture contact. That property holds up under normal residential conditions including wet mopping, spills, bathroom splash, and pet accidents. It does not mean the installation is impervious to water infiltration under all conditions. The click-lock seams between planks are mechanical connections, not sealed joints. Given enough water volume and enough time, water will work through those seams to the subfloor beneath.
The subfloor is where standing water causes its most serious damage in an LVP installation. A wood subfloor that absorbs water from a prolonged standing water event can swell, delaminate, develop mold, and lose structural integrity in ways that require replacement before new flooring can go back down. A concrete subfloor won't suffer structural damage from standing water but can develop mold and mildew at the slab surface if water sits beneath the flooring long enough in a warm environment. In either case the damage to the subfloor is often more extensive and more expensive to remediate than the flooring above it, even if the LVP planks themselves come through the event undamaged.
The response to a standing water event on LVP should be prompt and thorough. Remove the water from the surface as quickly as possible using towels, a wet vacuum, or whatever is available. Once the surface is dry, inspect the seams for any sign of water infiltration by pressing along the joints and listening for the soft, spongy feel that indicates moisture beneath the plank. If the water event was significant, pulling up the planks in the affected area to inspect and dry the subfloor directly is the most reliable way to confirm the subfloor is dry before the floor goes back down. LVP's floating installation system makes pulling up and reinstalling planks practical in a way that glued or nailed floors don't allow, which is a genuine advantage in a water event scenario.
The most dangerous misconception about LVP and standing water is the assumption that because the floor is waterproof, a water event can be addressed whenever it's convenient rather than immediately. The waterproof rating is not a timer that tells you how long standing water is safe. It's a description of the plank material's moisture resistance. The clock on potential subfloor damage starts when the water hits the floor, not when the waterproof rating runs out. Prompt response to any standing water event on LVP is the right practice regardless of how waterproof the product is rated.Β
