Yes, mold can grow under LVP flooring if the conditions are right. The LVP planks themselves don't support mold growth because SPC core material isn't organic and doesn't provide a food source for mold. The risk is in the subfloor and underlayment beneath the planks, where moisture accumulation combined with organic material and warmth creates exactly the conditions mold needs to establish. A proper moisture barrier on concrete subfloors, prompt response to water events, and adequate subfloor ventilation in crawl space applications are the primary defenses against mold developing beneath an LVP installation.
Mold requires three things to grow: moisture, a food source, and the right temperature range. SPC core LVP eliminates itself as a food source because limestone and PVC aren't organic materials mold can consume. But the subfloor beneath the LVP often is organic, particularly wood framing, plywood decking, and OSB subfloor panels that are standard in most residential construction. If moisture accumulates at the interface between the LVP and a wood subfloor, that moisture combined with the organic wood material creates conditions where mold can establish and spread without any visible indication at the surface above.
Concrete subfloors present a different mold risk profile. Concrete itself isn't a meaningful food source for mold, but concrete subfloors in below-grade installations accumulate dust, debris, and organic particles at the surface over time that can support mold growth if moisture is present. Detection is one of the more challenging aspects of mold under LVP because the floor surface gives no visual indication of what's happening beneath it. The first signs are often odor, a musty smell that seems to come from the floor but has no visible source, or allergy symptoms that are worse in specific rooms or areas of the house. By the time those signs appear the mold colony is already established and the remediation required is more extensive than it would have been with early detection. In basement and slab-on-grade installations particularly, the vapor barrier isn't just a warranty requirement. It's the primary tool for preventing the moisture accumulation that enables mold growth in the first place.
The most common mistake is assuming that because LVP is waterproof and the surface looks clean, mold under the floor isn't possible. Mold doesn't grow on the surface of LVP. It grows in the assembly beneath it where moisture accumulates. A floor can look and feel perfectly normal on top while a mold colony is establishing in the subfloor below. Homeowners who notice a persistent musty odor in a room with LVP and attribute it to something else rather than investigating beneath the floor are often allowing a manageable remediation situation to become a much larger one.
